Network Marketing Keys to Success

In today's economy, many people are looking for ways to
help create financial security. Some have resorted to real estate,
others have tried their hands in the stock market. But
today, more and more people are looking at the opportunities that
the network marketing industry can provide.

Unfortunately, people sometimes get the wrong impression of
exactly what network marketing is all about. Network marketing
isn't about taking advantage of your friends and relatives and
getting them to buy useless widgets. Instead, network marketing
is a people-to-people business that can allow the average person
create a long term, growing business by sharing products and
opportunity to the masses in a grass roots fashion.

It can be easy, it can be fun, but it does require a easy to
follow set of rules in order to succeed.

In this little essay and future installments, I'm going to share
some of my thoughts on finding success in network marketing. Some
of these thoughts may be very detailed, some will be overviews,
some of them will be train of thought concepts that I discover as
I'm working my network marketing business.

In this issue, I'm going to outline 4 key components you should
consider when choosing a company to work with.

Timing:

In real estate the old adage is "location, location, location".
In network marketing it's "Timing, timing timing".

Network marketing companies go through various growth phases and
there are specific times in this growth cycle where the
opportunity is the best for the average person. It's often
better to get into a program earlier rather than later. Yes,
there will be growing pains and occasional challenges as a
younger company grows. But the benefit of being in early and
being part of momentum growth is where fortunes have been made.

Yes, you could become part of an older company and do well in
it. But it will be tougher to find new people to share the
product and opportunity.

Suggestion: Get into a program early in its life-cycle for
maximum benefit.

Product:

History has shown that certain product lines are usually successful.

Things like nutritionals, health care and beauty have traditionally
been winners. But thanks to the world of the
internet and technology, other products are also achieving
success. Products that in the past could not have had success
since technology was not as advanced. Service products,
financial products and self improvement products are being
promoted very successfully via network marketing.

So, there are hot new concepts and products that are starting to
take the network marketing world by storm.

But there is one thing that is vital to your success in network
marketing. Choose a company and product that you can be excited
about. If you don't believe in nutritional supplements, don't
join a vitamin company. Don't understand, use or like makeup?
Don't join a cosmetic company.

Join a company that has a product line and philosophy that meshes
with your personality. By doing that it will make the process of
sharing the product and opportunity easier since you are a
"believer" in the product.

Also the product should be fairly priced for the masses. You don't
want to be selling light bulbs for $100 each!

Suggestion: Get into a program with a product that you believe
in or a product you would use. And a product that is reasonably
priced for the value of the product provided.

Compensation:

Unless you are going to join a network marketing company for
the product, more than likely, you will be wanting to make the
jump into a program to make money sharing the product and
opportunity. When you want to do that, you have to look at the
compensation system put in place by the company.

Compensation plans can vary wildly, and can often confuse people
when they see it. As my old grandpa used to say:

"If it's confusing, they're trying to hide something".

That is my philosophy in compensation plans as well!

When choosing a company look for a plan that is fair and easy to
understand. It should reward you well for initial sales of product and
should reward you for your organization purchasing /
selling the product to their customers.

Suggestion: Simpler is better when it comes to compensation.

Mentorship:

Network marketing is about building long term and profitable
relationships with your organization. That includes your downline
AND upline.

One of the biggest keys to success in network marketing is having
a good mentor / upline available to coach you and guide you along
the way as you build your business. Bottom line? You should
choose your downline AND upline carefully.

When you recruit people you want them to be coachable and use the
systems and programs available and you should do it too.

Each member should use their upline for training and guidance.

So when deciding to enter a company, I suggest interviewing
potential upline leaders / upline teams to see if you are all on
the same page and can work together.

I have joined programs in the past where the upline and I did not
see eye to eye and the whole business was a disaster.

Suggestion: Find an upline that you feel comfortable with
and is available to help you. AND be sure you recruit distributors
that you will be able to work with as well.

Google: A Hacker's Best Friend?

When Johnny Long wants information online, he turns to the same tool as most people: Google. But unlike the average Web user, Long isn't usually looking for Paris Hilton news and movie reviews. He's digging for credit card information, Social Security numbers and other private data stashed on corporate servers.

Long isn't a cyber-criminal--he just plays one in his day job, as a researcher for the information technology services company Computer Sciences (nyse: CSC - news - people ). But he is a hacker, one with a talent for innovating new ways to penetrate corporate servers, albeit for testing purposes only. He's also the author of Google Hacking for Penetration Testers, a best-selling book that shows how to use seemingly harmless Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) searches to uncover surprisingly sensitive information.

Long spoke with Forbes.com about his forthcoming book, a more general kind of "Hacking for Dummies" guide to hacking without technical knowledge, and the tricky question of whether to publicize hacking techniques that require little more than a search engine and two hands.

Forbes: What is "Google hacking"?

Long: Google hacking is really just a subset of something I call "no-tech hacking." You use un-technological methods to break technology. After 10 years of trying, I've discovered a whole pile of ways to do that. Dumpster diving (looking in office trash for security information); tailgating someone into a secured facility; pretending to be a UPS guy or a repair guy or a delivery guy ... these things work almost all the time and require very little technical knowledge.

So where does Google come in?

In the beginning, we'd use Google to case the companies we'd be trying to penetrate. But we discovered that the Google searches we were running were returning more information about the company than they might realize. Just by doing a search on a Web site, we'd find a password or usernames that would grant us access.

Google hacking grew out of that. You perform a Google search looking for sensitive information that either gives direct access to a network, or something subtle that could be used in conjunction with other finds.

What kinds of vulnerabilities in Web sites have you found through Google hacking?

We have examples where you can put in a Google query and immediately get access to part of a site that already has you logged in as an administrator. We discovered that just by searching for certain terms, you could find personal information like credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, anything an attacker would need for identify theft. On some education institution sites, we'd find entire Excel spreadsheets with students' names, Social Security numbers and even grades. But that's low-hanging fruit.

Without getting too technical, what's an example of a more subtle case, where you combine Google hacking with more advanced hacking?

For example, Google can help you find where an SQL server is vulnerable. SQL is basically the language of databases. Just by putting the right terms into a form on the Web, like a registration form on a site, you can do something called "SQL injection." Basically, your input into the form is confused with SQL code, and that can allow you to read data directly from a database, simply by typing into a Web login form.

Google allows you to find those vulnerabilities. If you type "MySQL error with query" into Google, some of the results will tell you which Web sites have had this error message, and that's the first step to an SQL injection. It's a nice way to do reconnaissance. It probes the Web very broadly without interacting directly with any target site, so it's difficult to detect.

Is Google becoming a more powerful tool for hackers?

Search engine popularity in general has been growing. But more importantly, the Web 2.0 movement means that everything is moving out to the Web. There's an absolute explosion of corporate and personal information out there.

Do you worry about the ethics of publicly discussing these tricks?

It's a huge debate in our industry. There are two camps: One camp says that when you talk about vulnerabilities you give bad guys ideas, but another camp says that you're helping good guys protect against bad guys. In the case of Google hacking, certain queries, like credit card queries, are very deadly stuff. So I've never talked about how to do a credit card query, though I've talked about the risk. It's a very fine line. I have to leave out enough information to avoid getting someone into trouble, but give the audience an idea of what's going on. So I always try to think about what it would mean to be on the other side of getting hacked, and I keep my professional clients in mind.

"Not to worry about Google"

Recently I've been hearing about a handful of Internet marketing "gurus" who seem to be intentionally misleading people. They're saying you DON'T need to worry about getting good rankings in Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

That's news to me!

Apparently, these gurus are telling people to focus only on traffic strategies like pay-per-click search engines, free content, blogging, and viral videos. They're saying not to worry about organic search marketing because it's a waste of time.

Now all those other strategies are valuable sources of traffic... but they don't hold a candle to the free search engines!

I'm going to be blunt, and I'm sure I'll ruffle some feathers when I say this -- but the fact is, anyone who says that Google, Yahoo! and MSN are a waste of time doesn't know how to get good rankings for their own sites!

But instead of admitting they don't know how to market their own businesses in the search engines, they'd rather lie to their students and say it's not important. And that is doing a HUGE disservice to their students and damaging their chances of success.

I'll be the first to admit: getting top search engine rankings is not an overnight job. But it's not what I'd call exceptionally difficult.

With the right information -- and a systematic approach to building a solid SEO campaign that gives the search engines what they're looking for -- you will get good rankings eventually.

The more competitive your market, the longer this can take... but persistence will pay off.

Does the benefit justify the effort? Well, in my humble opinion... absolutely.

Research has shown that a listing in the organic search engines will get 3 times as many click-throughs as the equivalent pay-per-click listing. AND, it'll have a 17% higher sales conversion! Those numbers sound good to me :-)

Search engine marketing isn't rocket science. It's a process. If you follow that process and stay on top of the latest tips and tricks you'll definitely see a profit.

It always pays to be nice. But some nice people are sometimes not all nice. It is not always the case. The truth behind is that there are pyramid groups that force their newly-entered distributors to purchase the expensive products or materials. Fake pyramid groups always have at the back of their minds the amount they could get. Sometimes it turns to be something from nothing. Take this friendly advice, right in front of your face I?m telling you, find ways to quit to the group.

Allow them to use you with just compensation. Do not allow anyone to use you as a distributor in which nothing?s left for you. Speak and think.

3. Do not heed to what the pyramid promoter is promising if he or she said that you can have more money through continued help in recruiting more distributors.

This is another clear sign of your being a victim of illegal network marketing. The bottom line here is work with just compensation. If the scenario is like the one stated above, quit now or be sorry. They might just be using you for their personal interest.

4. Some distributors don?t give ample time or attention to their network marketing group.

Don?t miss it. It is important. Some people are joining the group half-heartedly. But take note, it will count days or months to build an elevating career in network marketing.

5. Some network marketing operators take the business reluctantly as if its status will not able to decline in time.

Each member of the network marketing group must work hand-in-hand to sustain the set objectives of the group. This practice is not just recommended. It is a must to follow. But doing the otherwise will lead the path towards business failure.

6. Not realizing why you are operating the network marketing business.

It may sound stupid if after how many days of marketing operations you realized that you don?t have a definite target or objective in your business. But no matter how stupid it may be, it might be a reality that some are born as invalid plan setter. Early from the birth of your network marketing business, you should have already realized the reasons why you are driving the business. Recovery from money problems of the business is not like reading the A, B, and C. Setting your business objectives is the keyword.

7. Have a well-established commitment to work and duty.

There is no better time to start moving than NOW. Product distributors must attend to their respective assignments. One cannot make his or her business grow by just merely looking at it. Be committed to you work. Have time to pinpoint your business weaknesses so you can catch-up for the committed mistake if any.

Tip #1: Keep your email really PERSONAL: It should sound like you're talking to a close personal friend.

Tip #2: Keep your email SHORT: Try to keep it to 3/4 page max.

Tip #3: Spend a lot of time on your subject line! After all, if it doesn't catch people's attention and spark their interest, no one's going to read your email!

Tip #4: Make sure your email gets people to take a specific action -- and be sure to include this "call to action" as close to the top of your email as possible.

Tip #5: Track your metrics! Keep track of your open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates. That'll help you understand how well your email has performed, and where it needs to be fixed.
